In Montreal, an elementary school teacher dies abruptly. Having learned of the incident in the newspaper, Bachir Lazhar, a 55 year old Algerian immigrant, decides to offer his services as a substitute teacher. He is quickly hired to replace the deceased, in an establishment in crisis, while going through his own personal tragedy. Lazhar is a man of tact, probity and a rich sense of humor. In fact it is a serious, unsentimental film of real insight into loss, grief, guilt, exile and the true meaning of education. In English and French with English subtitles.
